Rough ride for rafters raises £1300
WORKERS more used to flying have swapped planes for boats to ensure a good cause benefited from torrents of cash.
Fifty brave members of staff at Prestwick Airport tackled some of the most dangerous rapids in the country to raise money for charity.
They took on the might of the River Tay at Aberfeldy in Perthshire in the second of the airport's white water rafting events.
Split up into teams, the workers were given a rough ride along a fast-flowing stretch of the country's longest river.
Despite numerous aches and pains and some scary moments, the men and women from the airport managed to raise more than £1,000 for the Ayrshire Hospice.
Congratulations this year went to winning team The Artful Dodgers, while The Honolulu Honeyz were last to cross the finishing line.
Airport worker Stephanie Watters, who took part, said: "We're delighted to have raised such an impressive total to help the staff at Ayrshire Hospice. The money will help the charity continue its excellent work ensuring people receive the best possible care at the end of their lives."
The event, first held in September last year, was a resounding success, providing workers with a great day out while also raising money for charities chosen by those taking part.
Mark Rodwell, chief executive at Prestwick Airport, handed over a cheque for £1,300 to the hospice at its recent summer ball.
He said: "This was a great energetic day out and because we have so many staff and departments spread over a large area, it also gave them an ideal opportunity to meet each other and mingle outside the pressures of work.
"The 50 people who took part can be proud of the fact they managed to raise such a great amount and it was a pleasure to hand this over to the Ayrshire Hospice, which is a fantastic cause."
The airport also donated its cardboard Elvis, signed by tribute act Gordon Hendricks and a prominent feature at last year's staff party, to the silent auction.
"This raised a further £120 for the hospice and has been earmarked as a Christmas present for an Elvis fanatic," added Rodwell.
